Elderly Housing Programme expands to include assisted living
New assisted living facilities will be integrated into the Elderly Housing Programme, providing comprehensive care for senior citizens.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has announced a major expansion of the Elderly Housing Programme to include comprehensive assisted living facilities. This initiative addresses the growing need for specialized housing solutions for Trinidad and Tobago's aging population.
New Assisted Living Facilities
The expanded programme will include three new assisted living complexes:
- Golden Years Complex, Port of Spain: 120 units with 24/7 medical support
- Sunset Gardens, San Fernando: 80 units with specialized dementia care
- Harmony Heights, Arima: 100 units with rehabilitation services
Services and Amenities
Each facility will provide comprehensive care and support services:
- 24/7 nursing and medical care
- Personal care assistance with daily activities
- Specialized dietary and nutrition services
- Recreational and social activities
- Transportation services for medical appointments
- Security and emergency response systems
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for assisted living facilities, applicants must:
- Be 65 years or older
- Require assistance with daily living activities
- Have a monthly income below $12,000 TTD
- Be medically assessed and recommended by healthcare professionals
- Not require full-time nursing home care
Cost Structure
The programme offers subsidized rates based on income levels:
- Low-income residents: 20% of monthly income
- Middle-income residents: 40% of monthly income
- All residents: Includes meals, utilities, and basic medical care
Construction Timeline
Construction will begin in September 2025, with the first facility expected to open in March 2026. All three facilities are scheduled for completion by December 2026.
Community Integration
The facilities are designed to integrate seamlessly with surrounding communities:
- Accessible design for visitors and family members
- Community spaces open to local residents
- Partnerships with local healthcare providers
- Volunteer programmes connecting with local schools and organizations
This expansion represents a $200 million investment in elderly care infrastructure and demonstrates the government's commitment to providing dignified housing solutions for senior citizens.
